Rob Powell

Rob Powell brings nearly 30 years and $5 billion worth of commercial financing and real estate asset management experience to his role as President of Powell Stern Capital, Inc., and formerly the Head of Finance for the Commercial Real Estate Group of Koenig-Rubloff Realty Group/Berkshire Hathaway. 

He has been actively involved in all facets of commercial real estate from an owner and lender’s perspective. Rob started his career as a residential mortgage broker, then moved to CNA Insurance, in their Financial Guarantee group, where he was responsible for asset managing an $800 million portfolio of new construction senior housing, apartment, retail, office, hotel, and industrial properties, which utilized municipal bond financing. During the real estate downturn in the late 80s and into the late ’90s, he spent his days doing workouts, debt restructuring, foreclosures, and dispositions. 

After eight years at CNA, Rob was employed by Equity Residential (one of Sam Zell’s REITs) for six years, where Rob’s focus was the assumption, restructuring, and daily oversight of the municipal bond portion of EQR’s secured debt, which comprised assets totaling approximately $2.5 billion. After success at EQR, Rob became an officer and minority investor in FSP, which was a small family-capitalized company that initially invested in and managed assets in the Urban Chicago market utilizing property tax reduction incentives and eventually ended up expanding to own, asset manage and/or substantially rehab 2,500 multifamily units in the greater Midwest as a JV/Sponsor. 

When Rob left FSP, he became Head of Finance/Asset Management and part of a four-member executive team at Village Green, a private company in the Midwest that owns, develops and/or manages approximately 40,000 apartment units and mixed-use real estate assets. As a co-founder of Powell Stern Capital, Inc., and with Koenig-Rubloff Realty Group/Berkshire Hathaway, Rob has been assisting owners, developers, investors, and lenders with the sourcing, underwriting, structuring, financing, asset management, and acquisition/disposition of debt and/or equity assets. 

Rob holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Real Estate/Finance from Arizona State University. He has held several offices at his local church, including the Chair of the Board of Trustees, for five years. Rob is currently a member of the Finance Committee.
